We leverage our R&D model to support universities realize a new paradigm for teaching, learning, and research.
American universities have helped drive significant economic growth, provide a pathway economic stability for millions, and been central to the success of our republic. To maintain this important societal role, we must reimagine a new paradigm of teaching and learning that addresses complex, interdisciplinary challenges and meets the needs of the training required for success in the twenty-first century knowledge economy.
Our vision for the future of higher education is one where teaching and learning is oriented around the practical act of solving complex problems. Students from multiple disciplines will take courses that focus on specific, well-defined societal challenges. Courses are offered across the entire cycle of problem definition, solution development, testing, and measurement and evaluation.

Bonds of Union leverages this model to support universities to realize a new vision of teaching, learning, and research that reorients higher education toward the practical act of solving complex problems that matter to society. What makes this model uniquely powerful is how it overcomes the traditional challenges of interdisciplinary research, provides a framework for researchers to consider the problems of the vulnerable as a part of their research efforts, and fast-tracks the teaching model to the needs of the twenty-first century economy.
This model of teaching and learning transitions us away from viewing students as passive recipients of information to empowered generators of new knowledge that can help to solve important societal problems.
It is only by working to solve a problem that we can achieve true interdisciplinarity in teaching, learning, and research.
Designing courses around problem statements allows faculty to learn as they teach. Under this model, faculty attain coherence between their teaching and research obligations.
Anchoring the learning experience around a given problem allows university students to develop the most important twenty-first century skill: learning how to learn — rather than learning merely how to efficiently retain information.

Alula has dedicated his life to renewing hope and prosperity in marginalized communities in the U.S. Prior to founding Bonds of Union, Alula served as Director of Special Initiatives and Special Assistant in the Office of Innovation & Improvement at the U.S. Department of Education. In this role, Alula helped to oversee the design and implementation of competitive programs such as the Investing in Innovation Fund (i3) and Promise Neighborhoods, and closely advised the Assistant Deputy Secretary of Innovation & Improvement on matters of policy and R&D. Previously, he was the Founder and Executive Director of the UW Dream Project, a Seattle-based college access and retention program for low-income and first-generation high school students. Alula received a B.A. in English Literature and Political Science from the University of Washington, an MPhil in Politics, Development, and Democratic Education from the University of Cambridge, and a J.D. from Yale Law School.
